16/05/26 – “Hill Hassled by HOFs – The Start of the Alexandra Rec Era” – Park Hill Vs Headley Old Freemens (Home– League Match)

Park Hill’s new era at Alexandra Rec threatened to fall at the first hurdle: with only 7 players throwing their hat in the ring by close of play on Thursday, the chances of them fielding XI were slim. However, Hunt, Forrest, Blake and debutant Knight answered the call and so Hill had secured a victory of sorts before a ball had been delivered! This spirit of both resilience and selflessness was embodied by Dafydd Jones – the consummate team player – and both sides observed a poignant minute’s silence in memory of a much-loved teammate.

Asked to bat first after Park Hill won the toss and chose to field, Headley Old Freemens responded with a superb display of controlled aggression, anchored by a magnificent innings from Knight, who finished 137 not out*. Knight arrived at the crease early with the score wobbling at 38–3 after Jones ripped through the top order, removing Miles (30), De Vlieg (0), and Axson (8). From there, Knight took complete control of the innings, rotating strike effortlessly and punishing anything loose.

The middle‑order partnerships rebuilt the innings and then accelerated, with Knight shepherding the tail superbly. Extras also played a significant role, contributing 41 runs, as Park Hill struggled to maintain discipline. Park Hill’s standout bowler was Tyler Jones, who finished with an excellent 3–34 from 8 overs, but he received little support as the remaining bowlers went at more than a run a ball. Subramanium produced a moment of magic to run out a non-striker, but the flat track and fast outfield seemed to suggest that scorecards should make for interesting reading this season!

The ‘HOF’s closed on a formidable 332/7, setting Park Hill a daunting chase.

Park Hill’s chase built almost entirely on two outstanding individual innings: McLean – 126 (119 balls, 23 fours)* and Chipperton – 102 (77 balls, 10 fours, 2 sixes). Despite losing Lawn (3) and Blake (4) early, McLean held firm, accumulating steadily before opening up later in the innings. Chipperton joined him and played with far more aggression, keeping Park Hill in the hunt through the middle overs and managing to block out Knight’s challenge on 99* of “don’t do an Elliot Ransom.” Their partnership of 215 for the third wicket was the highlight of the innings and briefly threatened to turn the match into a thriller. However, the required rate had ballooned beyond reach, and Headley’s bowlers kept their composure. Park Hill eventually closed on 263/3, a strong batting effort but not enough to chase down the huge target.

A first league defeat since 24th August 2024 for Hill, but plenty of positives as they settled into their new home.

In loving memory of Dafydd Jones.
